Yahallo! For those who don’t know me yet, I am a huuuge Madoka Magica fan. I can easily say that Madoka is my favorite anime of all time. If you haven’t seen that anime yet, why are you reading this blog instead of watching Madoka?! Noo, just kidding!! Don’t leave yet! I will try to write a spoiler-free blog about my experiences watching Madoka!
Before I do that, do know that the original Madoka series has 12 episodes. On top of this there are also 3 movies and a 4th was announced earlier this year (HYPE!!). The first two movies are actually recaps of the series, however, there are some slight differences between the original and the recaps. Thus the original would be better for first time watchers, whilst the movies are recommended for rewatchers.
To tell you the truth, I actually stumbled upon this masterpiece of an anime by chance. I added this anime to my plan to watch (PTW) list on MAL simply because I thought it looked cute. Just like many people, I add way too many anime to my PTW and then watch something that is NOT on my PTW instead. 😂
After a few months of growing my PTW I wanted to shrink this list, and I usually just spin wheeldecide and see what pops out. I remember during my winter holiday a few years back, it landed on Madoka. So I just went with it. I haven’t had the slightest clue what I was getting myself into, as I didn’t read the synopsis and didn’t knew what the show was all about at all. Furthermore, I didn’t have too many expectations for this anime. Again, for me it was just this cutesy, magical girl anime. And the characters are definitely very cute, don’t get me wrong! But, don’t get fooled: this show is so much more than a ‘just another’ magical girl anime! Don’t judge a book (ehh, anime) by its cover has never applied more truly than to Madoka.
The plot of the anime is just really terrific, and it really keeps you watching as a first timer. It has both absolutely heartwarming, but just as many absolutely heartbreaking moments. Even for a rewatcher, the show stays interesting, as you will be able to pay more attention to all kinds of ‘easter eggs’. Furthermore, the original soundtrack is really phenomenal. The soundtracks are composed by Yuki Kajiura, who has also composed tracks for Sword Art Online and Fate/Zero. Madoka’s soundtracks are one of the few anime soundtracks I still occasionally listen to! And it hits me as hard as the first time! Furthermore, the opening “Connect” by ClariS is how I became a fan of them as well, as mentioned in our previous blog! Even now, I listen to ClariS more than any other artists. 🥰 Can you believe these girls were only 14(!) when they released this song!
Lastly, what I found interesting is that Madoka Magica’s cast of characters is quite small, but nonetheless, they each play a really big role in the anime. The show provides its watchers with quite a lot of background information on all the Magical Girls, explaining why and how every girl behaves the way they do.
Thank you for reading till the end! I don’t want to say too much that might spoil the show, so you just have to see it for yourself! If you do want to give Madoka a try, atleast watch till episode 3. By then you will know what kind of anime it is! Have you watched Madoka before? Let us know what you think about this anime in the comments below!
